Physics of Energy
Forms of Energy
Energy exists in various forms and can be transformed from one to another:
- Kinetic Energy (KE) - Energy of motion: KE = ½mv²
- Gravitational PE - Energy due to position: PE = mgh
- Elastic PE - Energy stored in springs: PE = ½kx²
- Work - Energy transfer: W = F·d·cos(θ)
Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed:
- Total Energy = KE + PE = constant
- As an object falls, PE converts to KE
- In a pendulum, energy oscillates between KE and PE
- Friction converts mechanical energy to heat
Work and Power
Work is the process of energy transfer:
- Work = Force × Distance × cos(angle)
- Power = Work ÷ Time
- Power measures the rate of energy transfer
- 1 Watt = 1 Joule per second
