Physics of Energy

Forms of Energy

Energy exists in various forms and can be transformed from one to another:

  • Kinetic Energy (KE) - Energy of motion: KE = ½mv²
  • Gravitational PE - Energy due to position: PE = mgh
  • Elastic PE - Energy stored in springs: PE = ½kx²
  • Work - Energy transfer: W = F·d·cos(θ)

Conservation of Energy

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed:

  • Total Energy = KE + PE = constant
  • As an object falls, PE converts to KE
  • In a pendulum, energy oscillates between KE and PE
  • Friction converts mechanical energy to heat

Work and Power

Work is the process of energy transfer:

  • Work = Force × Distance × cos(angle)
  • Power = Work ÷ Time
  • Power measures the rate of energy transfer
  • 1 Watt = 1 Joule per second
